Students to confront Arnold on abortion at scheduled meeting will discuss stance of Catholic politicians

A group of young people from across the nation will meet with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Los Angeles today to discuss their concern about Roman Catholic politicians who support abortion rights.

"This is a dedicated group of individuals who want to talk to the governor about a basic Catholic teaching: You can't be both Catholic and pro-abortion," said Joe Starrs, director of American Life League's Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church.

The American Life League, or ALL, is a Virginia-based Catholic group that has included Schwarzenegger in its "Deadly Dozen campaign," which identifies pro-choice Catholics in public office and encourages them to either recant their support or stop claiming to be Catholic.

The meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m., is part of ALL's Summer Crusade for Life, which includes two-month protest walks from San Diego to Sacramento and from Maine to Washington, D.C.

"As a Catholic in the public eye, Gov. Schwarzenegger has a tremendous opportunity to defend the sanctity of all human life," said Anne Kadera, a senior at the University of Kentucky participating in the event.

"It is our hope that he will see this truth and use his position to protect innocent babies in the womb," she said.

ALL previously asked Catholic Church leaders to bar Sen. John Kerry from receiving Communion because of his support for abortion rights.

During their time in Los Angeles, the young adults -- who come from the United States, Canada and Mexico -- plan to meet with other elected officials, speak at Catholic parishes and walk through the streets of the city and pray and counsel in front of 22 of the city's abortion clinics.
Launched in January 2003, the Crusade for the Defense of Our Catholic Church has conducted numerous ad campaigns, organized protests and mobilized Catholics across the country.
