Fred Thompson Blowing it

Most of the attention on the straw poll at last week's Values Voter Republican Presidential Debate was on the big winner – Mike Huckabee.

The former Arkansas governor deserves the recognition he got from the delegates at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.

He entered the contest as the favorite of 35 percent of the delegates from pro-family organizations. But he finished the debate as the favorite of 63 percent.

That was quite an accomplishment.

There was, however, a big loser in the debate – one of the four GOP presidential candidates who decided not to show up.

The big loser was Fred Thompson, who entered the evening as the favorite of 15 percent of those in attendance. When the evening was over, he had the support of just 4 percent. No other candidate lost anywhere near that kind of support as a result of his performance or, in Thompson's case, his non-performance.

He also lost me.

My Comments: I wasn't able to see it this last time, but my favorites continue to be: Alan Keyes, Sam Brownback, and Mike Huckabee - all pro-life champions. It's early in the race, so we will see how things go.

Comments

  1. Mike Huckabee is no pro-life champion, he doesn't even know what the Mexico City Policy is.

JANET FOLGER: The Mexico City Policy states that as a condition for a foreign organization to receive federal funds, they will neither, quote, "perform nor actively promote abortion." Would you work to apply this Mexico City Policy to organizations within the United States, as well as abroad?

MIKE HUCKABEE: I just want to clarify, and I'm not trying to be difficult, but I want to make sure we're not being asked to apply a Mexican law to United States law. Is it the principle you're after, or the law itself?

FOLGER: It's the principle of not giving our tax dollars to organizations within our country that actively promote or provide abortions.

HUCKABEE: OK. I just want to make sure that we were not in essence agreeing to abide by a Mexican law.

FOLGER: No. It's an American law.

    HUCKABEE: OK. All right.

Anybody that didn't know about the policy created by Ronald Regan and Alan Keyes certainly isn't an avid pro-lifer.

  2. Jeff,

    That's not true.

I have been a pro-life activist for many years, and I was unaware of what the Mexico City policy was until it was explained above.

I'm not running for President, but that's why the president has advisors and his cabinet.

  3. I don't know all policies that the federal government has, as I am busy earning a living. I don't expect Huckabee to know them either.

Most of what he does is pro-life, so why are you attacking him?

  4. Huckabee is just as strong a pro-lifer as Brownback and Keyes. The ability to answer fully one reporter's question doesn't change his actions.

  5. Nearly all the republican candidates are pro-life except Guiliani, McCain and Romney (a flip-flopper). Huckabee and Keyes are the most outspoken.

See this is what happens when you have a candidate who will not tow the line for the family values crowd. Thompson's record speaks for itself. He supports States Rights. Smaller and less intrusive federal government is a basic principle that our country was founded on. It conflicts with those who want to make federal laws against everything they don't like or agree with.

Most conservatives don't know what it means to be conservative and citizens don't know their history. The ideals of the movement have been diluted and reduced to nothing more than a bunch of litmus tests on abortion and gay marriage.

George Bush cannot get out of office soon enough, and any candidate that supports expanding the federal bureaucracy will never get my vote.

  7. Thompson is a solid Pro-life, Pro-American candidate that has remained very consistent throughout his career.

Brownback is nice, but doesn't have the clout, steam or support, and the others are just not what they are cracked-up to be.

Thompson will win...even if he "lost" with you.
