Today's saint, St. Lydia Purpuraria, was the first Christian convert in Europe, a businesswoman who dealt in luxury goods. She is the patron saint of cloth dyers. Saint Lydia was born during the first century in Thyatira, a town famous for its dye works in Asia Minor, famous for its dye works, (hence, her name which means purple seller). She was a seller of purple dye and was St. Paul's first convert at Philippi. The following is from the Acts of the Apostles: And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, one that worshipped God, did hear: whose heart the Lord opened to attend to those things which were said by Paul. And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying: If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us. ~Acts 16:14-15 She was baptized with her household. Thereafter, Paul made his home with her while in Philippi. Lydia was a woman of hospital...
I agree with what Mr. Weigel is saying.
ReplyDeleteI also agree the main problem is within Notre Dame and not following the magisteriam of the Catholic Church. To have the white house occupant speak at the graduation is one thing, to honor him with a degree??? when he is the most radical pro-death person in the world; Notre Dame, you have a problem…
The second problem is white house advisors are trying to divide Catholics down the middle, thereby almost insuring their re-election in 2012. I say advisors because the white house occupant would trip over his own tongue if it were not for the monitor telling him what to say (I saw debates between him and Dr. Alan Keyes in Illinois in 2004). The bad news is that the “Intellectuals” at Notre Dame are no smarter than the white house occupant, or else they are plotting all this together. If they had any smarts, they would be able to see what this administration is trying to do…, USE Notre Dame for their political gain. For Fr. Jenkins to say we are inviting him “because he is the first black president” is very raciest. I say this because the only thing he is looking at is his race (P.S. he is ½ white which he never mentions). Fr. Jenkins has not looked at any of the white house occupants voting record, what he stands for, what he supports, etc.
