US Media shows ignorance of public attitudes on abortion
Poll data consistently show that a majority of Americans want to cut down on the incidence of abortion, even while a majority want abortion to remain legally available. William McGurn of the Wall Street Journal wonders why reporters continue to find these results contradictory.
Now, if this were 1973, that might be an argument. But isn't it just a wee condescending to suggest, after more than a generation of contentious moral and political debate, that the American people really haven't figured out what pro-life and pro-choice mean?
The poll results allow for an easy explanation, McGurn argues. Americans are not ready to overturn Roe, but remain uneasy about unrestricted abortion.
Notwithstanding a pro-choice orthodoxy that dominates our film, our television, our press and our colleges and universities, strong moral qualms about abortion have not gone away.

Many people alive now have never lived when abortion was not legal. I believe we need to continue to educate them.
