Five patron saints and 13 intercessors named for World Youth Day 2013 in Rio






May 29, 2012. (Romereports.com) The next World Youth Day will take place in Rio in 2013. Now, organizers have announced the five patron saints for the big event.The first is Our Lady of Aparecida, which is also the patroness of Brazil. A basilica is named after her and every year roughly 10 million pilgrims visit the site. Back in 2007 Benedict XVI made a visit, during his first trip to Latin America. 
  
Then, there's also St. Sebastian. He was a soldier who served under the Roman Empire. But he left the army because it persecuted Christians. He died in the year 288, as a martyr.

The third patron is Friar Galvao. In 2007, Benedict XVI made this Franciscan, Brazil's first saint. 

St. Therese of Lisieux, is also on the list. Since 1927, this French nun has been known as the patroness of missions. 

Last but not least, Blessed John Paul II is the fifth. In 1984 he founded World Youth Days. During his pontificate, he was considered 'the Pope of the youth.'

In addition, World Youth Day will also have 13 so called intercessors.  They are St. Rose of Lima, who is known as the first female saint of Latin America. There's also, blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, a young Italian who dedicated his life to helping the poor. Blessed Chiara Luce Badano, who suffered from cancer and offered her pain for the salvation of others. There's also, Frederic Ozanam, a French blessed  who left his mark for living a fully Catholic life. 

There's also, Brazilian Adilio Daronch, who was murdered at the age of 16 for being Christian. St. Teresa of the Andes, a Carmelite sister from Chile. Blessed Jose de Anchieta who preached throughout Brazil in the 16th century. Blessed Isidore Bakanja, who was killed in the Congo for being Christian. Blessed Irmã Dulce, a Brazilian nun who dedicated her life to helping the sick and the poor in the Brazilian city of Salvador de Bahia.

Other intercessors include St. George, a soldier from the Roman Empire who converted to Christianity and was beheaded because of it. Blessed Laura Vicuña is also on the list. She offered the pain of her disease for the conversion of her mother. St. Andrew Kim, the first Korean priest who was martyred in 1846, and Blessed Albertina Berkenbrock, a Brazilian girl who was murdered at the age of 12 for refusing to engage in a sexual relationship.

Saint Michael de Sanctis: Patron of Cancer Patients

Today is the feast of Saint Michael de Sanctis, also known as St. Michael of the Saints, a Spanish Discalced Trinitarian priest, the patron of cancer patients. Michael Argemir was born on September 29, 1591 at Vic, Catalonia, Spain. At age 6, he told his parents that he planned to become a monk and began modeling his life after Saint Francis of Assisi. Michael’s parents died when he was about ten years old. He then served as an apprentice with a local merchant. During this apprenticeship, he continued his fervent devotion to the Lord, especially to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At the age of 12, he joined the Trinitarian Friars at Barcelona, taking his vows at St. Lambert’s monastery in Saragosa four years later.  Shortly afterwards, Michael expressed a desire to join the reformed group of Trinitarians and was given permission to do so. Saint Gerard of Brogne: Patron of Abbots

St. Gerard was born to a noble family in Staves, Belgium, in 895. He descended from a royal line of military men and at first felt a share in this call to arms. He trained for the army and, as a page of the count of Namur, he was sent on a special mission to the French court. There, Gerard realized that he was being called to the monastic life. He stayed in France and joined the Benedictines of St. Denis, abandoning his noble birthright and all his worldly possessions. He spent eleven years in France as a monk before becoming a priest. Following his ordination, he left for Belgium in order to found a new abbey on his own estate of Brogne. He was its abbot for twenty-two years and during that period was instrumental in introducing St. Benedict's Rule into numerous houses in Flanders, Lorraine and Champagne.He became known for his engaging sweetness of temper, his strict observance of the Rule of St. Benedict and for the replacement of lukewarm religious practice with true piety.
