St. Thérèse of Lisieux, The Little Flower

1. If you were invited to a Halloween/ All Saints Day Costume Party, which saint would you dress up as and why? (The Blessed Virgin Mary,the Mother of God, is not an option.)

I would definitely want to dress up as St. Thérèse of Lisieux. St. Thérèse is a beautiful model of love and has been a dear friend to me for a long time. We have much in common in many areas of our lives. However, I did also contemplate St. Catherine of Siena, whom I feel very close to as well.

2. Which saint or other person would accompany you to the party?

My sisters - Pauline, Léonie, and Céline. I am hoping we would meet all of the rest of the heavenly saints at the party.

3. What famous quote would help others identify you?

"For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward Heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of love, embracing both trial and joy; in a word, something noble, supernatural, which enlarges my soul and unites it to God.... I have not the courage to look through books for beautiful prayers.... I do as a child who has not learned to read, I just tell our Lord all that I want and he understands."

4. Describe your costume.

I would wear the brown Carmelite habit of course and be carrying a bouquet of roses and a crucifix. I would have enough roses to share with everyone at the party, so each could present his/her rose to Jesus and to Mary. I guess I had better take a large truck, van, or SUV.

5. Which movie or film best depicts the life of this saint?
Thérèse, the Story of St. Thérèse of Lisieux , 2005 Luke Films directed by Leonardo de Philippis was wonderful! I saw it at a movie theater in St. Louis, MO when it first came out and the theatre was filled with so many Carmelite religious, I felt as if I were at a convent or monastery, rather than at a movie theatre. What a comforting feeling!

I also enjoyed an older black and white version of her life story I have seen a few times on EWTN. I believe it was filmed in 1939.

6. What is your favorite book written about this saint or that he or she has written? There are many great books on St. Therese, but my favorite has to be The Autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux: The Story of a Soul.

Saint Michael de Sanctis: Patron of Cancer Patients

Today is the feast of Saint Michael de Sanctis, also known as St. Michael of the Saints, a Spanish Discalced Trinitarian priest, the patron of cancer patients. Michael Argemir was born on September 29, 1591 at Vic, Catalonia, Spain. At age 6, he told his parents that he planned to become a monk and began modeling his life after Saint Francis of Assisi. Michael’s parents died when he was about ten years old. He then served as an apprentice with a local merchant. During this apprenticeship, he continued his fervent devotion to the Lord, especially to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At the age of 12, he joined the Trinitarian Friars at Barcelona, taking his vows at St. Lambert’s monastery in Saragosa four years later.  Shortly afterwards, Michael expressed a desire to join the reformed group of Trinitarians and was given permission to do so. Saint Gerard of Brogne: Patron of Abbots

St. Gerard was born to a noble family in Staves, Belgium, in 895. He descended from a royal line of military men and at first felt a share in this call to arms. He trained for the army and, as a page of the count of Namur, he was sent on a special mission to the French court. There, Gerard realized that he was being called to the monastic life. He stayed in France and joined the Benedictines of St. Denis, abandoning his noble birthright and all his worldly possessions. He spent eleven years in France as a monk before becoming a priest. Following his ordination, he left for Belgium in order to found a new abbey on his own estate of Brogne. He was its abbot for twenty-two years and during that period was instrumental in introducing St. Benedict's Rule into numerous houses in Flanders, Lorraine and Champagne.He became known for his engaging sweetness of temper, his strict observance of the Rule of St. Benedict and for the replacement of lukewarm religious practice with true piety.
