J.C. Cochran, Pundit for Fox 2, Slams Archbishop Burke

Watch the Fox video here to see what this "learned media expert" has to say about St. Louis Archbishop Burke. He said this on air on November 15.

WARNING

Caution: Watching this video may cause vomiting.

Here is a brief excerpt if you want to avoid this:

Corcoran begins by saying he is not a practicing Catholic, admitting that “many years ago I gave up on religion basically because I thought it was silly.”

“Burke is old school, but I’m not convinced old school works right now. Too many things have changed. What I see, again from the outside, is the Catholic Church pretty much at the end of its public relations rope. The sex scandals continue to mount, the flock is thinning, and young men and women aren’t exactly knocking down the doors of seminaries and convents trying to get in. And locally, instead of a respected spiritual leader in the community, you have a guy who’s been stomping around, alienating, threatening, intimidating, excommunicating and carrying on since the day he got off the plane from Wisconsin.”

Here is Catholic League President Bill Donahue's response:

"We called Fox 2 news director Kingsley Smith for his position and learned that he stood by Corcoran."

“They have some serious problems at Fox 2 in St. Louis. They have a commentator whose insulting remarks are matched only by his ignorance of his former religion, and they have a news director who is equally irresponsible. Contacting the cops about a Catholic woman who merely registered a complaint suggests that thuggery is another quality of the Fox affiliate. Perhaps they’ll call a SWAT team about my statement.

“We are blanketing the media outlets in St. Louis—print and electronic—letting them know about their colleagues at KTVI. To say that Corcoran and Smith are unprofessional is an understatement—they are disgrace to journalism and should be disciplined for their unethical behavior.”

I just can't believe the gall that some people have. This man is spiritually sick and is in desperate need of our prayers, as are all fallen away Catholics, but he needs them even more so because he is creating a public scandal and, even as a journalist, he should realize that his offensive behavior is very unprofessional and highly unethical.

Also, he must be very easily intimidated to call the police after a Catholic woman complained on the phone about his outrageous remarks unless perchance that was his conscience letting him know that what he did was rotten to the core and he feels extremely guilty for bashing the Archbishop. He needs to feel guilty about what he did! I wonder what his mother would say if she heard his comments? Hmm ... Maybe that was his mother calling on the phone.

  1. Well said, Jean. The spiritual battle is all around us, isn't it. I'm glad blogs like yours let us know about some of these things. It is time to speak out.

  2. How many people did Jesus compromise with? NONE Did Jesus gain popularity by saying things that people wanted to hear? NO Jesus spoke the truth, and look what happened to Him. Yes, the Son of God, Second Person of the Trinity, in Glory and Splendor, the asks us to"pick up our cross and follow Me", like Archbishop Burke, or you can compromise like most secular people want you to do.

Some people think Jesus said "follow me", but that is taken out of context, it really is "PICK UP YOUR CROSS and follow Me".

  4. Rosemary,

    Thanks for your kind words.

As long as there are strong Catholic leaders like Archbishop Burke, Catholics will be attacked and persecuted by the forces of evil. The voice of Satan comes to us through ordinary people and ordinary events in our daily lives making it appear "normal" and acceptable. How clever and deceptive he is!

    Bill,

Well said! Anyone who follows in Christ's footsteps will need to pick up their cross and follow after HIm. They can expect to be mocked, ridiculed, and persecuted. As followers of Christ, we must defend and support the Truth and when attacks on the Truth like this are made we all need to speak out in one voice and rebuke the enemy. Our strong leaders need our prayers, encouragement, and support. And, those who have fallen need to be lifted up by correction, prayers, and sacrifices.

    Bob,

    Thanks for your kind comment.

I just visited your Catholic photogrpahy site. You certainly are talented!
You obviously are a professional photography. The photos are stunning!

    God bless you!

  5. All I hvae to say to him is to check out some of the religious orders and seminaries that are MORE traditional and "old school".

While I don't have specifics here with me, one convent of traditional, full-habit wearing nuns has grown so fast they literally don't know where they're going to put the newcomers.

And these are all women in their late teens, 20s and early 30s.

"Old school" is more in than he thinks.

For me - I prefer it. I never understood why you'd worship a god who demanded no obedience, no worship, no sacrifice, and no self-control (the modern version of god). What's the point to that? You're basically worshipping yourself.

God demands all of that behavior and loves me in return. A far better deal than the pretend spirituality that infects our culture.

  6. Amy,

Great comment! I hear what you're saying. This news media person is totally out of touch with what is going on in the Catholic Church today. He obviously doesn't read the Catholic news reports of the thriving vocations in the traditional orders.
He needs to do his homework before he spouts off like this. When was the last time he was even in a Catholic Church? His perceptions about what is happening in the Church today are distorted.

  7. The learned media expert prefaced his remarks with, "I'm not what they'd call a practicing Catholic, I attended..." at which point I hit Stop. Once again a person takes the fact that they are not a practicing or devout or even catholic Catholic as their point of authority by which they presume to speak with authority on the Catholic Church. How would JC evaluate someone's right to speak on the media or on say his own family if the commentator began, "I am not what you'd call a journalist but I took a creative writing class in high school..." or "I have no personal contact with JC and his family but bla bla bal."

    Just a thought :)

  8. I should add, so I'm not misunderstood, that my previous comment is not a commentary on whether or not you should have posted the lnk and the information. I think it's good that you did and we need to be informed. My comment was wholly directed at JC and folks like him and it is a reflection of my own weariness with such and a desire to, while remaining informed, am pulling in a bit these days to hear more clearly from One who speaks as one with (actual) :) authority.

  9. It pains me to say this, especially when i had such love and respect for our past archbishop. Burke is not helping the church or the communities he is supposed to be supporting.

I don't think JC is being any better by calling for his removal, but The reason for his outburst is valid. This mess could have been solved within the church, and without the involvement and persecution of its people.

JC might have sent a better message if he just took the time to do a little homework, and make sure he was directing this anger at the right people, and to a constructive end. I don't know if he is trying to spur anything constructive to happen, but he has managed to insult a large part of his audience.

It hurts me to see people treating each other this way, and over a subject that is supposed to help unite us.
