Have a Happy and Holy All Hallow's Eve!

Image
The History of All Hallow's Eve In 834, the evening of October 31 became All Hallow's Eve when Pope Gregory IV established November 1 as the feast of All Saints, followed by a day in honor of her soon-to-be saints, the feast of All Souls. This time of year was chosen because it was the time of barrenness on the earth. The harvest was in, the summer done, and the world was brown, drab, and mindful of death. Snow had not yet descended to comfort and hide the bony trees or blackened fields; so with little effort man could look about and see a meditation on death and life hereafter. Apparently how you spent the vigil of All Saints depended on where you lived in Christendom. In Brittany the night was solemn and without a trace of merriment. On their "night of the dead" and for forty-eight hours thereafter, the Bretons believed the poor souls were liberated from Purgatory and were free to visit their old homes. The vigil for the souls, as well as the saints, had to be kept...

St. Wolfgang: Bishop, Reformer

Image
Born in 924 in Swabia, Germany, St. Wolfgang studied at Reichenau, Switzerland under the Benedictines and at Wurzburg before serving as a teacher in the cathedral school of Trier. He entered the Benedictines at Einsiedeln (964) and was appointed head of the monastery school, receiving ordination in 971. He then set out with a group of monks to preach among the Magyars of Hungary, but the following year (972) was named bishop of Regensburg by Emperor Otto II. As bishop, he distinguished himself brilliantly for his reforming zeal and his skills as a statesman. He brought the clergy of the diocese into his reforms, restored monasteries, promoted education, preached enthusiastically, and was renowned for his charity and aid to the poor, receiving the title Eleemosynarius Major (Grand Almoner). He also served as tutor to Emperor Henry II while he was still king. Wolfgang died at the village of Pupping in upper Austria, on October 31, 994. He was canonized in 1052 by Pope St. Leo IX. Bishop Finn: Warriors with Our Eyes Fixed on Heaven

Image
Last Saturday I had the privilege of consecrating the restored church of Old St. Patrick. This is the oldest existing Catholic church in Kansas City. It will serve as the Oratory for the Latin Mass community which first began here under Bishop John Sullivan, and for many years has shared the parish of Our Lady of Sorrows. One of the beauties of the Traditional Latin High Mass that I celebrated is that it highlights a most profound aspect of the Mass, namely our participation with the Communion of Saints. The high altar, multiple candles, incense and Gregorian chant, collectively give us a striking image of the Heavenly Jerusalem which is our ultimate home. Every Mass celebrates this reality, but I must admit that the traditional Mass captured this magnificent expression of the ultimate hope and goal of Christians in a powerful way. We should reflect on this often, because the ultimate goal of everything we do is to get ourselves to heaven and bring with us as many as we can. The month ...

Fr. Tom Euteneuer: Commending the Bishops

Faithful Catholics in the US have been both stunned and gratified by the recent show of episcopal strength in dealing with the heretical nonsense of "Catholics" in public life who clearly misrepresent the Church's teaching on vital issues. To date, more than fifty bishops have spoken out about this kind of misconduct or issued guidelines about voting at this critical juncture in our nation's history. The trend is truly heartening. Let's pray that it continues! Much more could be done, of course, but I am grateful that more bishops are standing up to strengthen and protect the faith of millions. Many have been longing for this show of valor from our fathers in the faith - and yes, they are our spiritual fathers. When they are strong, we are strong; and when they are weak - the flock is ravaged by wolves. A few bishops deserve special mention. A good example is Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento, CA, who stood up before the misnamed "Catholic Gay and Lesbian"...

No Joke: Obama's Secret Police!

A Civilian Security Force just as well funded as the military? Here in America? That is exactly what Obama wants and he is not ashamed to tell you about it! This guy is a real nut case! Basically what Obama is talking about is creating a Committee for the Defense of Liberal Ideology and Political correctness funded by a half trillion taxpayer dollars. National Security for this crowd is not about stopping terrorists from killing our children. National Security means to teach our children to understand the terrorists and their motivations so that our children can learn how to live their lives submissively so as not to offend the sensitivities of the very sensitive America haters. ~ Via Creative Minority Report and Gateway Pundit .

Five Tips for Those Who Plan to Vote for Obama

Image
1. Don’t wear T-Shirts or other paraphernalia in support of your candidate. However, you can copy the image on the left, apply glue to the reverse side of it, and then put it on your clothing, and the line will move faster. If you yell, "Yes we can!" or "Save us, Obama!" as loud as you can, you'll be out of there in no time at all! 2. Vote as early as you can -- most polling places open around 6PM, but in other states they open at 7PM. Don't forget the date to vote -- Tuesday, November 11. Mark it on your calendar now. 4. Make sure you register to vote as soon as you arrive. You won't be allowed to vote unless you are registered first. Don't carry any ID with you -- just say the secret acronym: HOPE = Helping O bama P retend he's E xciting. 5. Plan ahead. Make sure you know where the polling places are. This year they will be located at the abortion mill or the Planned Parenthood closest to your home. The pleasant friendly abortionists there wi...

Obama's Plans for Your Taxes

Obama told Joe the Plumber he believes in spreading the wealth. Examining his record and policies shows he will redistribute taxpayers' hard-earned money to his abortion cronies. In an economy where money is getting scarce, businesses are closing, people are losing their jobs, and the stock market is tanking, Obama wants to raise taxes. Our government is in deficit, but Obama will continue the flow of MILLIONS of YOUR tax dollars to his abortion cronies.

Seven Reasons Why Barack Obama is Not a Christian

St. Alphonsus Rodriguez, Mystic

Image
St Alphonsus, or Alonzo as he was called in Spain, was born at Segovia in Spain, on July 12, 1531. From childhood he was devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He loved her as his mother. This childlike devotion to her was the main reason for his sanctity. Alphonsus was destined to be an example of Christian perfection in many states of life. On the death of his father in 1545, he was called home from Alcala where he was studying, by his mother burdened with the care of eleven young children, and though a boy of fourteen, he was placed at the head of the family business, which involved the buying and selling of wool. At the request of his mother, Alphonsus married the virtuous Maria Suarez. His married life of four years was marked with much suffering. His wife died leaving behind a son; his mother, too, died leaving behind her eleven children. He was about 32 years old when his mother died. He bore his cross willingly. Alphonsus started a more fervent life. He wanted to become a Jesuit....

Proof of Barack Obama's Endorsement of Infanticide

Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) opposition to an Illinois state law protecting infants born alive after abortion procedures is coming back to haunt him. Illinois Senate recordings of State Senator Obama's concerns with SB 1663 - An act concerning abortion In 1999 a gruesome discovery was made that an Illinois hospital was shelving babies to die in a soiled utility room who had survived their abortions. The Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act was introduced in 2001 to provide legal protection to all born babies, wanted or not, including the right to medical care. Then-state Senator Barack Obama voted against Born Alive 4 times in 3 years and was the sole senator to speak against it on the Senate floor in 2001 and 2002. In 2002, the Federal version of Born Alive passed unanimously in the US Senate and by overwhelming voice vote in the House. The pro-abortion group NARAL even went neutral on the bill. But In 2003, Barack Obama voted against the identical version of Born Alive ...

Benedict XVI: The Cross teaches Christians to renounce pride and choose love

Image
VATICAN CITY, 29 OCT 2008 (VIS) - In today's general audience, held in St. Peter's Square in the presence of 20,000 faithful, the Pope spoke of St. Paul's theology of the Cross. The Holy Father recalled how the Apostle of the Gentiles, following his experience on the road to Damascus, changed his life completely. Paul remained deeply marked by "the central significance of the Cross: he understood that Jesus died and rose for everyone. The Cross, then, demonstrated the gratuitous and merciful love of God", he said. "For St. Paul the Cross had a fundamental primacy in the history of humanity. It is the focal point of his theology because 'Cross' means salvation as grace for all creatures. The theme of the Cross became an essential and principal element of the Apostle's preaching". Benedict XVI then went on to highlight how "the 'stumbling block' and 'foolishness' of the Cross", of which St. Paul, speaks are to be foun...

Developmentally Disabled voters coached into supporting Obama

This news story comes from California: The California Republican party is asking the secretary of state to investigate an organized voting campaign involving developmentally disabled adults in Tuolumne County. As many as ten clients of the Thumbs Up! adult care center have already cast absentee ballots under the supervision of center director David Simerley, and nearly all of them were for Barack Obama. "We all registered to vote and we all sat together as a group and went over our ballots and voted," Simerley told News10. Among those voting was Michael Rascon, 56, whose father described him as having the mental capacity of a 5-year-old. "What kind of people would do this to somebody like that," asked Sam Rascon, who discovered his son had registered and voted only after seeing him with an Obama button last Thursday. "He wouldn't know one candidate from another." My Comment: Can you imagine using Developmentally Disabled people in this way? H/T: Michel...

Win or Lose, Many See Palin as Future of Party Despite all the criticism, she has many supporters among Republicans who see her as bright, tough and a star in a party with relatively few on the horizon. “She’s dynamite,” said Morton C. Blackwell, who was President Ronald Reagan's liaison to the conservative movement. Mr. Blackwell described vying to get close to Ms. Palin at a fund-raiser in Virginia, lamenting that he could get only within four feet. “I made a major effort to position myself at this reception,” he said, adding that he is eager to sit down with her after the election to discuss the future. Asked if the weeks of unflattering revelations and damaging interviews had tarnished her among conservatives, he replied, “Not a bit.”

This is a Must - See for all Catholics! Fr. Corapi at his best on the Right to Life and This Upcoming Presidential Election:

Obama's Higher Taxes and His Culture of Death

Some people have blindfolds on and just don't get it -- with Barack Hussein Obama in office there will be higher taxes. Democrats are well-known for raising taxes and spending our money -- especially on things we don't want them spending it on -- like abortions done by Planned Parenthood , sex education for kindergartners , special rights for homosexuals, and lots of other disgusting causes . With Obama in office, those who need financial help won't get it. Having been poor myself -- I know that the Democrats don't help the poor -- it's all rhetoric . When my husband was laid off last year from his professional position for several months -- the Democratic congress did nothing to help us. We nearly lost our home, while some who were unwilling to work or to do anything to help themselves other than cash a check (as well as Senator Obama, who was getting rich from ACORN and deals with criminals and terrorists), were living high on the hog. Like most US citizens, w...

"We don't have a debt crisis, we have a death crisis!"

Killing the Economy: Dennis Howard's "Elephant in the Living Room" Although it would be simplistic to blame the current financial crisis on America's propensity for killing the unborn, it is equally simplistic to pretend, as many do, that the two have absolutely no correlation. Demographic researcher Dennis Howard predicted the long-term economic consequences of abortion in his 1997 book, The Abortion Bomb: America's Demographic Disaster. He wrote, "I see little hope that we can avoid an eventual crash on Wall Street that will make the 1930’s look like cashing in your cards after a bad game of Monopoly." Well, the S&P 500 has not quite reached the levels characteristic of the Great Depression, but the most recent charts are beginning to bear more than a passing resemblance to those of that era. Howard, whose background is in market research and investigative reporting, has been tracking the effects of institutionalized abortion on the American econom...

22 Weeks: Stunning Movie

WorldNetDaily : Born-alive abortion movie stuns viewers -- Film based on mom's true story reaches new audiences, including Congress From Jill Stanek : 22 Weeks screenings: I began writing about the death of Baby Rowan soon after it happened in 2005, having received a call from his distraught mother, who had an instant change of heart when seeing her baby. He was aborted in an Orlando, FL, abortion clinic toilet and survived for several minutes. The Born Alive Infants Protection Act should have protected him but didn't. State and federal prosecutors failed him. Clinic workers went so far as to turn away EMTs at the mill door who the mother had called to help her baby. Now a short movie has been made of that tragedy, 22 Weeks . MORE My Comments: I am looking forward to this new pro-life film. You can demand that it come to your city. Catholic Carnival 196: Explorations

Sarah at Another Day of Catholic Pondering has done such a beautiful job on this week's Catholic Carnival! She makes us all want to go there just to look at the great photos she has posted and to appreciate the special blessings of motherhood! Yes, I get a little sentimental and teary-eyed when I look at the special baby photos there. I also laugh a little and reminisce. But the best part of the Carnival are the fantastic posts. Here are just a few of my favorites: Asking for Help taps into the camaraderie of this Catholic blogosphere, as our own beloved Steven (he of Bookworming Fame) asks most humbly for our help. Would you consider it? Decorating for Advent when you could decorate for Christmas? It's the ongoing challenge of Catholic parents everywhere. Find an idea here for compromising with lights. Laughter Is Still the Best Medicine reminds us that for centuries humans have needed to be reminded not to take themselves too seriously. Hope will make you consider, thro...

Today's Catholic Tradition: Bread of the Dead

Today is the day that Christians began to prepare food such as bread of the dead and soul cakes for the feast of All Souls. In some areas people would beg for ingredients to make these cakes on this day. A soul cake was a sort of oat cake, which, in Catholic times was baked specially as a gift for poor and needy people, and these people on receiving it would pray for the dead belonging to those who gave it. Fire has always been a symbol of immortality, and the immortality of the soul was symbolized by lighting fires during the night of All Souls; perhaps the simpler people thought that their little furze fires dotted over the hillsides would show the way to souls who were that day making their journey from purgatory to heaven! Long after the Catholic faith had been cast out of this country, relics remained at Soulmass of the once universal praying for the dead, though, as was inevitable, these became empty and corrupt. Even in the 19th century girls still went "souling" fr...

Sts. Simon and Jude, Apostles and Martyrs

Image
Today is the feast day of Sts. Simon and Jude Thaddaeus, Apostles, who both preached the Gospel in Mesopotamia and Persia. The name of St. Simon usually appears eleventh in the list of the apostles. The first cousin of Jesus, he was born at Cana and is surnamed "The Zealot." He preached in Egypt, Spain, and Lybia, leaving behind him the fertile hills of Galilee, where he had been engaged in the healthful cultivation of the vineyards and olive gardens. He later rejoined his brother, Saint Jude, in Persia, where they preached and died as martyrs together. Patronage: curriers; sawmen; sawyers; tanners St. Jude, also called Thaddeus or "Courageous", is the author of the short epistle in the New Testament. He was the apostle who asked the Lord at the Last Supper why he had manifested himself only to the disciples and not to the whole world (John 14:22). He was the son of Cleophas and the woman named Mary who stood with the Blessed Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross as...

Great Post on Sarah Palin

Check it out: A Confirmation of My Own Intuition About Sarah Palin

This Made My Day!

Today I had some business dealings with a company in Tennessee. I dialed the number (or rather what I thought was the number) and spoke with a friendly man with a deep southern accent. He told me that one of the numbers I dialed was wrong and then he initiated a conversation about the weather here in Wichita, KS. We had a brief chat and he ended the call with a cheery, "Don't forget to vote for John McCain!" My response was, "I most definitely will be voting for John McCain!" Just as quickly as I had said that, he came back with excitement in his voice, "How do you like that Sarah? Isn't she something?!!!" Now, that made my day!

Asking for Help A Second Time

Here is a plea for help from my friend and blogger, Steven, at Book Reviews and More , who was off work for 30 months with an injury, and is in need of assistance to provide for the basic needs of his family: I was told my original request was not clear. We need help to make ends meet, specifically rent that is due this week. I was not asking for help to keep the blog going. I was asking for help to meet our needs, diapers, formula, gas, groceries ... I have always had a hard time asking for and accepting help. I know it is a personal character defect and have been working on it. I once had a friend accuse me of robbing others of the blessing of giving, because I would not ask for help to go on a retreat even though over the few years prior to that I had sponsored others going.Well It is time to ask for help again. As many of you know I was off work for 30 months with an injury, that took place at work. I am thankful that I have retrained and am now employed full time. You can read my...

Have You Seen This Website Yet?

A Web phenomenon is sweeping across pro-life circles, largely under the radar of mainstream news. With the full support of American Life League, and only eight days before an historic election, a Web site called "Just One Judge" is invigorating the pro-life movement. With a unique fusion of video and petition, "Just One Judge" calls on all Americans who would defend human life to dedicate their votes to that most important issue and hold our elected officials to their campaign promises even after Nov. 4. Visitors to the site are asked to sign a pledge to be given to the next president of the United States. This pledge is a reminder that LIFE is the most important issue to millions of Americans. It is also an admonition to the next president that it is the president's solemn and sworn duty to appoint Supreme Court justices who will apply equal justice under the law – for the born and preborn alike. "The next president and U.S. Senate will appoint and confirm...

It's Not the Constitution That's Flawed...

Seven years before Barack Obama's "spread the wealth" comment to Joe the Plumber became a GOP campaign theme, the Democratic presidential candidate said in a radio interview the U.S. has suffered from a fundamentally flawed Constitution that does not mandate or allow for redistribution of wealth. In a newly unearthed tape, Obama is heard telling Chicago's public station WBEZ-FM in 2001 that "redistributive change" is needed to equalize economic resources in the nation, pointing to what he regarded as a failure of the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren in its rulings on civil rights issues in the 1960s. More No, it's not the Constitution that's flawed, it's BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA! Obama is all for change -- the kind of change that we have nightmares about -- the kind that destroys our fundamental rights and basic freedoms. It's the kind of change that kills innocent infants, endangers the lives of mothers, and welcomes terrorists...

Saint of the Day: St. Frumentius of Ethiopia

Image
Saint Frumentius was still a child when his uncle, a Christian philosopher of Tyre in Phoenicia, took him and his brother Edesius on a voyage to Ethiopia. In the course of their voyage the vessel anchored at a certain port, and the barbarians of that country slew with the sword all the crew and passengers, except the two children. Because of their youth and beauty they were taken to the king at Axuma, who, charmed with the wit and sprightliness of the two boys, took special care of their education, and later made Edesius his cup-bearer and Frumentius, who was a little older, his treasurer and secretary of state. The king, on his deathbed, thanked them for their services and in reward gave them their liberty. After his death the queen begged them to remain at court and assist her in the government of the state until the young prince came of age; this they did, using their influence to spread Christianity. When the young king reached his majority, Edesius desired to return to Tyre, and F...

World Priesthood Day is Sunday October 26

I received this via email: World Priesthood Day 24-Hour Prayer Intentions Here are 24 prayer petitions for priests. In the interest of several people praying together in Spirit, we are asking individuals and couples to lift up that prayer intention during the specified hour if possible. By doing so, each intention hopefully will be offered by several across the nation during that hour. In this way we can be united in our prayer focus by time zone. 12:00 AM: Pray for the health, welfare and spiritual growth of all priests, especially those that have been a gift to you and your family. Name them and visualize them as you pray. 1:00 AM: Pray that those men being called by God to the Priesthood listen and hear that call. 2:00 AM: Pray that priests may strive to be men of prayer so their work may be fruitful. 3:00 AM: Pray that priests may be an instrument for an increase of understanding and unity between the other Christian Churches and the Catholic Church. 4:00 AM: Pray for mission...

Saint of the Day: St. Gaudentius, Bishop

The early life of St. Gaudentius is unknown and most of the information about him comes from his own writings. He was probably born in the second half of the 4th century and apparently was educated under St. Philastrius the Bishop of Brescia, Italy and had a very deep knowledge and understanding of theology. While on pilgrimage to Jerusalem St. Philastrius died and Gaudentius was coerced into accepting the bishopric which he felt himself totally unworthy of. He was consecrated bishop by St. Ambrose and his reputation for holiness and pastoral greatness soon became known. Twenty-one of his sermons still exist today and show his uncanny ability to explain the mysteries of the faith in such a way as to inspire people of all backgrounds and abilities. In 405 Gaudentius was sent by Pope Innocent I and Emperor Honorius to Constantinople to plead with Emperor Arcadius for the release of St. John Chrysostom.
